City of Wiener Neustadt
The city’s silhouette, clearly visible from afar, is characterized by the impressive late-Romanesque cathedral, the tower of the castle, the water tower and the extensively revitalized casemates.
The City of Wiener Neustadt was founded in 1192 and was once surrounded by a city wall with several towers, part of which still exists today.
In the 15th century, the Habsburg ruler Frederick III designated Wiener Neustadt as his imperial residence and had the city redesigned accordingly. Many buildings in the city centre date back to this period.
During World War II, defence industries were located in Wiener Neustadt and its surrounding areas. Therefore, the city became a repeated target of attacks for the US Army Air Force, consequently leading from severe damage to almost complete destruction.
Reconstructed after the end of war, the City of Wiener Neustadt has not only become the administrative centre for the region. It has also turned into a transportation hub, a major shopping destination, a site for education (several high schools, 2 universities of applied sciences) and a location for economic activity.
Wiener Neustadt is home to the Theresan Military Academy, the world’s oldest military academy, established by Empress Maria Theresa in 1751 to train officers for the Austrian army.
Wiener Neustadt is considered the lively hub of the region and cultural hotspot in the south of Lower Austria. The city never seems to stand still.

The city of Wiener Neustadt has a humid subtropical climate classification with dozens of days exceeding 30°C (86°F) and night temperatures not dropping below 20 °C (68 °F).
In July and August, the average high temperatures are ranging between 27 and 32°C (81 and 90°F) with a record maximum exceeding 38°C (100°F).
